西科斯基公司于1926年底正式開始對S37的研發，1927年春天正式投產。S37的雙引擎可以跨大西洋飛行，如此大的航行距離，讓多數人對S37的表現為之贊嘆。

西科斯基 S37再出售給美國航空后，轉換成一個普惠R-1690的發動機，這一轉換，讓S37更加適合進行民用飛行。

西科斯基 S37在所有西科斯基公司的飛機中雖不是最搶眼的，但卻不能忽略。它為日后新機的發展做出了很大的貢獻，可以說S37是一個“先驅者”。
