保時捷911 Carrera RS首次出現于1972年10月的巴黎車展，發布的時候就是一臺徹頭徹尾的賽車，完全不需要任何的改裝就符合當年Group 4參賽標準，即特別跑車組的賽事。這款車是一輛無可挑剔的911，由于車重只有975公斤，在最大功率為210馬力的作用下，極速可達245公里/小時。雖然它配備的是2.7升風冷式6缸發動機，但它在賽道上卻不輸于12缸的法拉利。

這款最初預計只生產500輛的原廠賽車，外觀上最具突破性的創舉莫過于車尾翹起的“鴨尾式”擾流板，這個保時捷設計師完全出于賽道上求勝的巧妙構思，再一次印證了亞歷山大•保時捷所言，即“時髦是完美設計的結果”，這也掀起了一股追隨者眾多的后擾流板風潮，連帶使得911 Carrera RS 2.7的市場銷售遠超乎先前的保守估算，到1973年時銷量就已突破了1000輛。這一輝煌的銷售成績不僅滿足了Group 4賽事的規范，甚至讓Carrera RS 2.7得以晉身挑戰Group 3組別并一舉拿下了當年歐洲GT杯九戰七勝的輝煌戰果。直到停產時，911 Carrera RS 2.7總共生產了1508輛，其中包括200輛運動款和1308輛旅行款。近40年后的今天，這款車依舊擁有極高的身價，當然也是全球保時捷收藏家眼中最具價值的911之一。
