寶馬X5 M和寶馬X6 M是寶馬 M家族首次擴展到全輪驅動車型。他們集寶馬 xDrive智能全輪驅動系統和動態驅動力分配系統（Dynamic Performance Control）于一身，同時具備經典寶馬M高性能汽車所特有的動力強勁、駕控敏捷、車輛回饋清晰等特定要求和優越品質。在各自的車型細分市場中，兩款新車型在卓越的加速性能、橫向動態性、轉向特性、短制動距離以及效率等方面樹立了動態性能的新標準。

裝備的新型M雙渦輪發動機是世界上第一款采用兩排氣缸間的環繞式共用排氣歧管以及雙渦流雙渦輪技術的發動機，也是寶馬公司引以為豪的專利技術。廢氣渦輪增壓器連同三元催化轉換器一起位于兩排氣缸之間的V形部分，這一設計不僅一如既往地保持了BMW M迅捷、靈敏的特色，還非常有利于確保全時扭矩恒定條件下的動力線性增長。發動機在1，500–5，650轉/分的轉速范圍內可持續穩定地提供680牛頓米的最大扭矩。

配有六擋M運動型自動變速箱，換擋動態性能更加優化，換擋更為舒適，確保了運動性的駕駛風格。通過短暫中斷燃油噴射和點火實現創新的扭矩減少概念，從而確保了極短的換擋時間。駕駛員可以選擇使用電子選擋桿，或通過BMW M特有的方向盤鋁制換擋撥片進行換擋。

新車均具有特別設計和制造的車身結構，保障了最大的乘員安全性。采用輕質技術的高性能制動系統，能夠提供幾乎沒有衰減的優越制動性能和極佳的制動控制。雙氙氣復式大燈包括日間行車燈功能、自適應型制動信號燈和配備前后不同規格防爆輪胎的20英寸輕質合金輪圈。

該車搭載4.4升渦輪增壓V8發動機，最大功率輸出為555牛米，最大扭矩為680牛米，百公里時速加速時間為4.7秒，配備6擋手自一體變速箱，采用前置四驅的驅動方式，最高車速被控制在250公里/小時。輪胎規格為：前275/40 R20 后315/35 R20。
