簡要說明	在1999年推出X5之前，寶馬沒有通過性較強的SUV車型。而X5就是寶馬涉足SUV車型的第一款，而且寶馬給自己的SUV進行了重新定義：SAV（Sports Activity Vehicles），既兼具SUV的應付復雜路況的能力和高性能豪華房車的鋪裝路面行駛穩定性。所以，E53是寶馬開創性的一代車型。作為寶馬的首款高性能SUV車型，一經推出就吸引了很多人的目光，填補了市場的空白。X5全靠寶馬的第一代xDrive全時四驅系統，針對開放式差速器的弊端，通過對每個輪子獨立的動力分配、獨立制動，并且偵測阻力較小的車輪切斷動力，并把動力傳輸到阻力較大的那個車輪，來增加車子在非鋪裝路面上的脫困能力。該車搭載4.4升發動機，最大功率輸出為325馬力，配備4.8升發動機的車型最大功率輸出可達355馬力。
