在2012年日內瓦車展上，沃爾沃發布了全新的V40車型，它是一款介于兩廂車和旅行車之間的全新車型。這款車型更加突出實用化功能，對家庭用戶的需求給予了更多的關注。V40的定位很明確，它擁有兩廂車型C30的靈活，三廂車型S40的穩重，最重要的它還擁有旅行車的空間。V40車身尺寸要相比寶馬1系、奧迪A3有所增加，更能符合家庭用戶的日常使用需求。
傾斜的引擎蓋和A柱幾乎保持了一致的傾斜程度，修長的車身比例均勻。相比于一般的兩廂車，沃爾沃V40后門之后的小窗顯示出這款車要明顯要大一號，相比于傳統的旅行車，V40短促的車尾又要緊湊得多。車尾部的設計和幾乎所有沃爾沃品牌車型一樣，凹凸有致的線條和鋼琴靈感的尾燈打造出沃爾沃品牌特有的飽滿。
從內飾上來看，全新V40繼承了沃爾沃家族簡約而不簡單的內飾氛圍設計，儀表板和中控臺上方的顯示屏連為一體，中央出風口則位于顯示器下方將中控區獨立出來。中控臺依舊是沃爾沃鏤空式的設計，整個中控面板也同樣采用了簡單的設計，四個圓形按鈕分布在控制鍵兩側，整個面板也采用了金屬拉絲的材質打造而來。
全新沃爾沃V40也具備了一流的安全和駕駛輔助功能，包括沃爾沃汽車開創的全自動剎車行人探測技術、觸摸式自動巡航道路校正技術和泊車輔助系統。其中，泊車輔助系統，將讓平行泊車變得簡易輕松。
動力方面，沃爾沃V40車型技術平臺與C30相同，因此新車的動力選擇上也同樣有望繼承來自C30的2.0L和2.4L四缸發動機，匹配雙離合器變速器。此外V40還有望配備一臺2.0T增壓發動機，最大功率約240馬力左右。
作為一輛比兩廂車稍大而又比旅行車稍小的跨界車，沃爾沃V40時尚且又實用的表現將能夠贏得更多消費者的青睞。V40預計將在沃爾沃汽車比利時根特工廠投產，在日內瓦車展亮相之后，它將于今年夏天率先于歐洲上市，預計之后不久就將會進入到國內市場。
