簡要說明	1938年初，二戰的硝煙開始蔓延到整個歐洲，美國陸軍總部開始計劃尋求一款輕型偵察車，以便取代傳統用來傳遞軍情與負責先遣偵查任務的軍用三人座摩托車及改裝的福特T型車。于是在1940年春，美國陸軍總部向135家汽車制造公司發出了競標通知，他們的需求看似很簡單：一款輕量化、易于操作、耐用度高、可靠靈活的四輪驅動車型。最初，只有兩家公司感興趣：威利斯-奧夫蘭多汽車公司（Willys）和美國班塔姆汽車公司（Bantam）。不久，隨著福特汽車公司參與進來，三家公司為獲得有利可圖的政府合同展開了競爭，在極短的時間內制造了1500臺用于試驗的原型車。在進一步試驗和評估之后，美國軍方選擇了“Willys Quad”作為標準車型，“Jeep”的名稱也隨之誕生。
