貝爾 407直升機把貝爾 206系列的堅固可靠與美國陸軍軍用直升機系列的高性能合在一起，成為國際上用于企業行政級商務飛行、私人俱樂部飛行、警務執法、反恐、空中支援、消防、滅火、醫療救護等最具有競爭力的直升機，同時它也是目前世界上完成此類任務最多的直升機機型。

 貝爾 407采用HTS-900新渦軸發動機，功率為680千瓦，發動機總重量增加到2.56噸。燃油裝在兩個互連的抗墜毀軟油箱中，加輔助油箱，載油量比oh-58d有較大增加。它采用低噪聲巡航系統，利用全權數字發動機控制系統把旋翼轉速降低為巡航轉速的90%~93%，從而降低了arh的通場噪聲。

貝爾 407采用單旋翼帶尾槳布局，采用經過改進的OH-58D的4片槳葉旋翼、尾槳和減速器系統。機體防護有所改善。前機身包括駕駛艙和座艙，空間不擁擠，改善了乘坐舒適性。機身兩側舷窗面積比原型機增加了35%，安裝特殊玻璃，增加了艙內采光，擴大了駕駛員和乘員視野。
