2010年6月8日，柏林，“新一代鉆石DA42”飛機成功首航。實際上，鉆石DA42并非專門為使用生物燃料而設計的機型，而是奧地利鉆石飛機公司生產的一種著名機型。在這次試飛之前，歐洲宇航防務集團只是對其引擎略加改動。

鉆石DA42飛機運營簡易，經濟適用，具備雙發飛機的性能和安全性，但運行成本卻和單發飛機相當，因此該款飛機也成為了目前訓練機的首選。碳纖維合成材料 制成的機身，堅固、安全、耐腐蝕性強，不需要太多維護，具有優異的空氣動力性能。動力方面配備了使用航空煤油的雙發Thielert Centurion.1.7發動機，具有革命性的意義。機艙內載有最接近波音737系列等大型飛機的電子設備——Garmin G1000系統，為飛行培訓教學，提供了很大的方便。
